Is active listening easy or difficult?

In our second leadership session, our Managing Partner Noriko Takagi explored the true depth of Active Listening. It is far more than just hearing words; it is about being fully present to observe the speaker’s entire experience — how they feel and how they live the story they are telling.
This deep presence is the gateway to high-quality relationships. When we listen this way, engaging with all our senses, it creates a powerful chemistry between people that enables us to learn and grow together.
To help leaders create the right environment for these "chemical reactions", Ms. Takagi shared five essential principles:
1. Obtain permission: Seek consent before asking deep questions.
2. Suspend judgement: Focus entirely on understanding, not evaluating the speaker.
3. Set the scene: Intentionally dedicate specific time and space for the conversation.
4. Resist the rush: Avoid hurrying to conclusions; allow the dialogue to develop.
5. Embrace silence: Do not fear quiet moments. Stay patient and fully present.
The Key Takeaway: consistency and Care
Fostering a dialogue that sparks genuine chemistry requires both consistency and care. Just as a fine distilled spirit becomes a great whisky over time, a relationship needs consistent, careful attention across a period of time to mature and grow.
To achieve this, two elements are crucial:
- Authentic Self-Awareness: Putting in the effort to be aware of your own state and being authentic about it.
- Allowing Authenticity in Others: Creating the space for others to be their true selves.
When these elements align, it triggers a remarkable chemical reaction that drives collective development. The session at German Chamber of Commence Japan (AHK Japan) gave all participants great opportunity to have such learning sparks to grow together.
